Introduction to Guardian

Guardian is a built-in safety feature that lets you set up boundaries in VR that appear when you get too close to the edge of your play area.

Guardian Modes

Guardian offers two modes for set up:

  1. Stationary: Is used while w headset while sitting or standing in place. Stationary Mode creates a default Guardian area of 3 feet by 3 feet (1 meter by 1 meter) centered on yourself.
  2. Roomscale: For using your headset while moving around inside your play area. Roomscale allows you to draw your Guardian boundaries in your physical space using your Touch controller. We recommend a safe and unobstructed space measuring at least 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet (2 meters by 2 meters).

To switch Guardian modes or redraw your Guardian boundaries:

  1. To launch the Universal Menu, press the recessed Meta button  on your right Touch Controller. After the screen flashes, press the recessed Meta button  on your right Touch Controller again. Repeat this process eight times, waiting for the screen to flash each time. Press the Meta button  on your right Touch Controller again two additional times, but the screen will not flash. After the twelfth press, the Universal Menu should appear at the bottom of the screen.
Note: If the menu does not appear, please repeat these steps.

  2.  Hover over the clock on the left side of the Universal Menu.

  3. Select Quick Settings
  4. Select  Guardian.
  5. Select Stationary or Roomscale, then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Guardian. The settings you can manage here include:
    1. Adjust guardian: This puts you back into the guardian setup like you did when you first set up your headset.
    2. Set floor level: Allows you to adjust the floor level of your Guardian Boundary.
    3. Boundary color: Changes the color of your Guardian Boundary.
    4. Double Tap for Passthrough: Enables the ability to double tap the side of your headset to switch to and from passthrough mode.
    5. Clear Guardian History: Clears Guardian history for all accounts on the headset. This means if you have more than one person’s account on your Meta Quest headset, Guardian maps and tracking data will be removed from all accounts.
    6. Glanceable Boundary: When enabled, you can look down at an angle while in-VR to quickly see where you are in your playspace.
    7. Boundary Sensitivity: Determines how granularly you want to adjust your guardian boundary alerts. There are two options:
      1. Simple: You’ll adjust the sensitivity of all of your boundaries collectively with a single slider. Lower sensitivity generally means you won’t be alerted until you get closer to your boundaries.
      2. Advanced: You’ll adjust the sensitivity of your boundaries at a more granular level using the following settings:
        1. Headset distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the guardian boundary.
        2. Controller distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the guardian boundary.
        3. Headset speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.
        4. Controller speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.
If you're setting up Guardian for the first time, follow the instructions you see in your headset. You can also watch the video below for an overview of setting up Guardian.
